As part of our training programme Resilient Europe: Training in Resilience and Youth Leadership in Post-Crisis Contexts, we are introducing simple and effective psychological exercises designed to support mental well-being and resilience among young people and those who work with them.
One of these practical tools is the 4-4-4 Breathing Technique, a short and accessible exercise that helps calm the body and mind during moments of stress, fear, or emotional overload.
What is this exercise?
The 4-4-4 Breathing Technique is a guided breathing exercise that focuses on regulating the breath in order to slow down the body’s stress response. In situations of crisis or prolonged pressure, breathing often becomes shallow and rapid, sending signals of danger to the brain. By consciously controlling the rhythm of breathing, this exercise helps restore a sense of safety and inner balance.
Why is this exercise important?
This exercise supports:
emotional regulation and stress reduction
grounding and presence in the moment
increased self-awareness and calmness
resilience in challenging and post-crisis situations
It is particularly useful for youth workers, youth leaders, and young people who may experience anxiety, uncertainty, or emotional fatigue.
How to do the activity
Find a comfortable position
Sit or lie down comfortably and gently relax your shoulders, neck, and jaw.
Inhale for 4 seconds
Slowly breathe in through your nose while counting to four, allowing your lungs and abdomen to expand.
Hold for 4 seconds
Hold your breath for four seconds and notice any tension in your body.
Exhale for 4 seconds
Slowly breathe out through your mouth while counting to four, releasing tension with each exhale.
Repeat the cycle
Continue the exercise for several rounds, until you feel calmer and more grounded.
Part of the training modules
This exercise is part of Module 1: Resilience: Psychological and Social Aspects, developed within the training course Resilient Europe: Training in Resilience and Youth Leadership in Post-Crisis Contexts. The module provides practical tools to help individuals better understand their emotional responses and strengthen their ability to cope with stress and crisis.
